Link rides Epona in Hyrule Field in the original game and the new Switch 2 remake.

The original Ocarina of Time launched for Nintendo 64 in November 1998, reaching Japan on November 21 and North America on November 23. I cannot believe (or maybe I can) that here we are, almost 28 years after the game's original release, all excitedly waiting to play the game again…
For me, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was where it all started. I don't necessarily remember where I was the first time I laid eyes on the game. I was probably at my cousin's house, or maybe my grandparents', as I didn't yet have an N64 of my own.
But I remember how I felt. I remember feeling mesmerized and awestruck by the world that I saw on that old CRT TV.
I was already a big fan of many fantasy series, including “The Lord of the Rings”, and since Peter Jackson's adaptations hadn't yet been released (or even started filming), to me this was a fantasy world like the books I loved so much brought to life on screen for the first time.
For anyone who played it back then, stepping onto Hyrule Field felt enormous. The game offered a rich, expansive world that fueled our wildest imaginings.
Over time, of course, games built on the foundations that games like Ocarina of Time laid. This has made the game feel smaller and more outdated, possibly unappealing and clunky to those whose memory of the game isn't bathed in a healthy glow of nostalgia.
I have played the original many times over the years (I still have my N64), though even in my head the graphics are those of the 3DS version. Notable updates like being able to take the Iron Boots off without menu-diving in the Water Temple made going back to the original harder too, once I'd tasted the other side.
I have played a few minutes of the Switch 2 rerelease of Ocarina of Time, and my copy of the game sits looking longingly at me as I write this. Let me tell you: It is breathtaking, like playing it again for the first time. I've only played long enough to get through the intro and run around Kokiri Forest, but I've got a weekend of ignoring all of my real-life obligations and reliving old memories waiting for me.
Anyway, that's enough rambling from me. Enjoy this sizable collection of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time memes from way, way back in time, and may it bring those who stumble upon it joy for many years to come.

We're starting with this old meme, because now it's 2026 and the game somehow actually looks like this now
